Flower Blossom

Keun shik Shin / Republic of Korea

Describe a marginalized person you choose.

  • Age   82

  • Sex  Female

  • The person’s major condition you are trying to deal with.

1. she is the grandmother of the big family. By going through some hard works day after day, her body hurts all over. And her memories are fading away because of dementia

2. As the care of their children has become difficult, she moved to a nursing home last year. Sometimes, her children visit her on weekend. They talk about their recent life stories.

3. Nursing home is not a good place for her soul to rest, since many strangers and a hospital-like atmosphere.

  • Describe the design intent for the chosen person.

1. I wanted to make a special, cozy place in the garden in front of the nursing home. The round, warm exterior of the Flower Blossom contrasting to the stern nursing home will ease her mind.

2. The Egg represents the ordinary life in a familiar circle form that you could always see in around and Egg also symbolizes protection and care. I hoped she could rest in The Egg feeling cozy protection by its shell.

3. The petal-shaped hole on the wall will also help her to feel the stream of time with seasonal changing light, which is also opposite to the nursing home, where time seemed to stopped and be stagnant.

4.  The place will be her “Querencia”, where she could recall the happy memories with family and take a rest alone in friendly atmosphere, feeling living nature.

Design Statement

1) The subject, concept of the work
“Flower blossom” is the Soul shelter plan for Lee Jung Sook whose strength has weakened due to disk and early dementia symptoms. Lee Jung Sook became 82 this year. She married and raised five children, and now she is the grandmother of the big
family. By going through some hard works day after day, her body hurts all over. And her memories are fading away because of dementia. As the care of their children has become difficult, she moved to a nursing home last year. Sometimes, her children visit
her on weekend. They talk about their recent life stories and ask her about her health.

After a short meeting, her children go back to their daily life. She is now left alone, living her normal life again. She sometimes talks to other elderly people in the rest area, or takes a walk in the garden. But neither of these things compensates her like Family visit or her time alone at outside of nursing home. Nursing home is not a good place for her soul to rest, since many strangers and a hospital-like atmosphere. So for her, I wanted to make a special, cozy place in the garden in front of the nursing home. The round, warm exterior of the Flower Blossom contrasting to the stern nursing home will ease Lee Jung Sook’s mind and help her to chill. The petal-shaped hole on the wall will also help her to feel the stream of time with seasonal changing light, which is also opposite to the nursing home, where time seemed to stopped and be stagnant. The place will be her “Querencia”, where she could recall the happy memories with family and take a rest alone in friendly atmosphere, feeling living nature.

2) Design Concepts
The Egg is an object which breaks its shell and hatches. It represents the ordinary life in a familiar circle form that you could always see in around. The Egg also symbolizes protection and care. I hoped Lee Jung Sook, who took care of her children from their birth, could rest in The Egg feeling cozy protection by its shell.

The petals that flutters in various colors according to season changes implicates the stream of time. The changing light also strengthen the symbolism of time of The Egg. The fluttering petals will bring warm, colorful lights in to space. The egg will have special attraction both in and out by random, rhythmic disposition of patals. Being in the space, Lee Jung Sook could reminisces past life and find the meaning of her life in the present, feeling seasonal changes over time.

3) The installation of a work
First, make a frame using wooden components on the site to be installed. Put a half-egg wall made in a factory on top of it. A shelf is installed between the two walls and the two walls are combined to create a perfect egg-shaped shelter. and Creates a ramp that connects the entrance to the ground. All materials are made from recycled materials.
