Design Statement

Anonymous people, overwhelmed messages, and dark clouds over my heads. That’s how I see the world when I was heavily depressed a few years ago.

A common problem that I faced everyday in my life is the emotional breakdown that happens from times to times and the urgent need to cry. Most of the time I can’t not find a right place or moment to do it. So I would usually end up trying hard to paralyze myself, or shed my tears in the toilet and the back stair. Once I couldn’t help but start crying when I was still in the discussion
classroom. After class I curled up on a bench in the school building, while feeling other students passing by and watching me with sad eyes. I didn’t know how to respond to their care or ignorance. At that moment, I wish I could hide myself from the outside, because a inner world is broken.

I remember the words Maria said in the Sound of Music —- When the Lord closes a door, somewhere he opens a window. Personally, my emotional breakdowns are often due to the fact that I see no way out to any problems in my life. And maybe I am not the only one who are looking for such a window. I want to design a “window” for the depressed people who are facing
similar struggles and feeling uncomfortable to cry in the public like me, a window that opens for a crying soul.

The person will pass through the window and find his or her inner world. The space will be small but safe, dark but peaceful, like a cave in the remote mountain. Crying, a unique experience belongs to the human being, is not published but encouraged here. After the person taking care of himself or herself, the light from the window will lead the person back to the external world. A soul will leave with a precious memory of crying, healing, and learning to be stronger.
