The unorganized sector of India is very broad; it consists of several occupational groups of labors. The
rickshaw pullers also come under the unorganized sector category. They are one of the most
vulnerable & backward section of society, who are in the need of social security. Majority of the
rickshaw puller community are migrated, illiterate and poor rural people.

"Whatever satisfies the soul is truth"- the truth lies in understanding the most fundamental needs
and aspirations of a person and experiencing sheer joy and happiness in achieving it. Each and
every individual strive to find this truth in everything he does.
The design manifests a shelter to achieve the true needs which is simple and sober like his
character, a space which is safe and comfortable contrary to his road struggles. The soul lies in
designing a true space which is based on the following 8 principles:
1. Functionality, 2 .Personalization, 3 .Uniqueness, 4 .Self-Efficiency, 5 .Flexibility, 6 .Safety
7.Aesthetics And 8 .Honesty.

 

 

Design Statement

Theme
RIKSHALAY is derived from two words Rik ; derived from the Japanese language word “jinirikisha”
which means human powered vehicle” and Shala; meaning "shelter" in Sanskrit.


Concept
"Whatever satisfies the soul is truth"- the truth lies in understanding the most fundamental needs and
aspirations of a person and experiencing sheer joy and happiness in achieving it. Each and every
individual strive to find this truth in everything he does.


Design and Development
The design manifests a shelter to achieve the true needs which is simple and sober like his character,
a space which is safe and comfortable contrary to his road struggles. The soul lies in designing a true
space which is based on the following 8 principles:


1. Functionality:
Optimum utilisation of spaces keeping in mind of the user requirement. The idea was to accommodate
basic spaces like kitchen, toilet, sleeping and living space.


2 .Personalization:
Private and public spaces have been segregated. Private area like sleeping area and storage has been
planned on the mezzanine level and kitchen and living/dining on the ground level.


3 .Uniqueness,
Separate space for Rickshaw parking have been planned.


4 .Self-Efficiency,
Basic services including Water tank, effluent tank, service pipe, WC & bathing, sink etc. have been
provided.


5 .Flexibility,
The outer shell has been planned keeping in mind of the seasonal variations of the composite climate
in North India.


6 .Safety:
M.S formwork cladded with cement board gives a rigid shell, creating a safe environment.


7. Aesthetics:
The basic architectural principle of form like solid and void has been utilised properly to get the pleasant
form. The light yellow walls with transparent P.C sheet accentuating the overall appearance. The façade
has been used as a space for Film posters keeping it flexible.


8 .Honesty:
Selection of materials and Optimum Space requirement has been carefully incorporated.


Material
Foundation: m.s pipe 2”X2” welded on 6”X6” m.s plate fixed on 9”X9”precast concrete block
Frame work: M.S. Pipe 2”x2”
Skin: twin 12mm cement board with 10mm cavity
Flooring: composite floor board supported on brackets fixed with 2”x2” m.s pipe
Roof: Top metro sheet on frame work 2”x2” M.S. pipe


Method of Installation
  1. Excavation for concrete blocks
  2. Fixing of metal plate over concrete blocks
  3. Erection of m.s. pipes
  4. Providing horizontal tie pipes
  5. Fixing of cement boards on facade
  6. Placing composite fibre board for flooring
  7. Fixing of Metro sheet on M.S. pipe.
